Outside the BLOCKS
Quilt Prep
1. Backing fabric must be at least 6" to 8" larger than the quilt top on ALL sides. (If your quilt is 70 X 90, then your backing should measure at least 82 X 102). Bed sheets are not acceptable as backing fabric. Specialty plush backings, like Minky, must be one piece without any seams.

2. Quilt top, batting and backing must be squared up. Batting should be trimmed slightly smaller than the backing. Measure your fabric at the top, center and the bottom. Measurements should be the same to ensure that tucks do not occur during the quilting process. Borders that do not lay flat will cause puckering, pleats or fullness.
3. It is highly recommended that you purchase batting from Outside the Blocks to ensure quality results. Inferior battings that might damage the quilting machines may be rejected.
4. Eliminate loose threads on the back and front of the quilt top that could either show through the layers or get caught in the quilting process.
5. Quilt top must be free of pins, buttons, charms, sequins, couching and embellishments.
6. Outer edge seams must be back-tacked to prevent them from coming un-stitched when loading them onto the quilt frame or during the quilting process.
7. If there is a specific direction to your quilt, mark the top edge of the quilt and the backing with a safety pin and note attached.
8. Press your quilt top and backing fabric thoroughly. If the backing is pieced, it is recommended to use 1/2" seams. Seams that are not pressed flat may cause small areas of bulk.
9. Top, batting and backing must be separate. Do not baste, pin or tack together.
10. If you want the binding sewn to the quilt top during the quilting process, make sure and submit it with the quilt top. Ask for instructions about bindings if you plan to do this.
11. A quilt top or backing that is submitted without completion of all the quilt prep instructions will incur extra charges because of the time and effort it takes to get the quilt ready for machine quilting at the rate of $35.00/hour.
